Vestavia Hills was named after the 20-acre estate of Birmingham’s former mayor George B. Ward. The estate is situated on the crest of Shades Mountain on the northern edge of the city. The house was used as a tea room and reception hall until the Vestavia Hills Baptist Church purchased it. A gazebo from the property was moved to a more prominent location to serve as a landmark gateway into the community. Today, Vestavia Hills is full of recreation parks and athletic departments. Ward Park, the main park in the city, features five baseball fields, a walking track, a community playground, and a skate park. It’s situated near the community swimming pool, the Civic Center, and the Senior’s Lodge.
